Snow in Summer

The kitchen counter was covered with 100 pendants in process...only half way through the process... and my weekend art markets were approaching fast!

A few days before, my husband and I had made a date with each other - we would break from work a bit early one day the following week and drive to Mirror Lake in the Uinta Mountains - as we both had been working flat out and needed a break...and you know what they say about 'all work and no play'... we were there!
I promised myself I would keep the commitment no matter what! Well, 'no matter what' had arrived and was staring me right in the face! It was 93 degrees in the valley and we were literally hot to trot! So, without an ounce of guilt, we dropped our work and headed for the hills!
The ride was awesome & the scenery divine...deep blue sky...a few big puffy clouds...perfect!
As we climbed in elevation the wild flowers appeared and the mountain streams and rivers banks overflowed from the still melting snow.

We spotted a young deer buck crowned with newly sprouted velvet covered antlers and a mother sandhill crane and her baby foraging on the shoulder of the road. The aspen trees were a-flutter with brilliant spring green leaves...spring?
It looked like early spring! Awesome...I love spring!

A few miles further down the road the mountain’s lakes levels were the highest we had ever seen…rising up the trunks of the pines that grew on their banks… banks that had disappeared under the icy cold waters of snow melt.

The sky was a winter gray, with big lazy clouds floating low to the ground.  As we approached the turn for the road to Mirror Lake we were surprised to find that it was closed … because of snow! And oh yes… did I mention it was July 8th!

We continued on to the summit, where we were serenaded by the low, dull, roar of distant thunder and rewarded with a spectacular scene of glorious mountains blanketed with snow and clouds, and air that smelled crisp &clear.

When we got out of the car we were shockingly refreshed by ice cold melting snow on naked flip flop feet…all within 90 minutes of home! It just doesn’t get any better!
We felt lucky to be present in the moment when heaven and earth meet…
it was a  magical show!

I am so glad we kept our commitment to each other…and Mother Nature…it was a date worth working all through that night for!

  1. I love the mountain pictures. What is the name of that mountain? Can you make a necklase with the smiley face of the snow man? Mary
